ETHIOPIA: NATIONAL ID TO BE MANDATORY FOR BUSINESS LICENSE SERVICES

The Ministry of Trade and Regional Integration announced two key initiatives: a mandatory national ID requirement for business services starting this year and an expanding online service platform.Jirata Nemera, the Chief Executive Officer of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs, highlighted the convenience of online services. Customers can now access and pay for business licenses and registrations entirely online, eliminating the need for physical visits. However, starting in September 2024, a national ID card will become mandatory for obtaining these services. This collaborative effort, involving the National ID Project, the Ministry of Revenue, and other relevant bodies, aims to maximize efficiency and minimize customer abuse, wasted time, and unnecessary costs.Currently, over half (57%) of the ministry's services are available online, with a staggering 1.7 million customers utilizing them in just the past seven months. By the end of the fiscal year, this number is expected to reach 90%, with full online service implementation anticipated for next year. Special accommodations will be made for areas facing infrastructural or security challenges.Jirata encouraged the business community to prepare beforehand by obtaining national identity cards before the September 2024 deadline. Additionally, a dedicated phone line system accessible via 965 is in the works, further streamlining the overall user experience. (ICE ADDIS ABEBA)
