Neom has started the construction of its Hydrogen and Innovation Development Centre (HIDC) in Oxagon Industrial City. The construction works are being undertaken by US-headquartered Air Products and Chinese contractor Tianchen Corporation China, which is part of China Eleventh Chemical Construction Company. Announced in 2022, the HIDC facility will serve as a hub for testing new technologies in the clean energy industry. The centre will gather data from Neom Green Hydrogen Company’s (NGHC) first 20MW electrolyser facility from ThyssenKrupp Nucera, aiming to produce decarbonised and clean fuels, in partnership with Saudi Aramco. The electrolyser facility is the first of a planned 2.2GW installation for the Neom green hydrogen and ammonia complex. HIDC will house both the electrolyser and the e-fuels testing facilities. Located in Neom’s Oxagon industrial complex, the NGHC integrated facility will produce hydrogen to be synthesised into carbon-free ammonia for export exclusively by Air Products to global markets. It comprises 2,000MW of electrolysers to produce 650 tonnes of hydrogen a day and air separation units to produce nitrogen for the conversion of hydrogen into 1.2 million tonnes of ammonia a year. NGHC is the joint venture implementing the project and is equally owned by Neom, Saudi utility developer Acwa Power and Air Products. NGHC reached financial close on the project in May last year following the signing of financial agreements with 23 local, regional and international banks and investment firms. It also concluded the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) agreement, valued at $6.7bn, with Air Products as the nominated contractor and system integrator for the entire facility. Air Products is also the exclusive offtaker for the green ammonia produced at the facility for over 30 years.
