KAZAKHSTAN-EU-WHEAT-OPINION

EU may introduce import duty on grain from Kazakhstan- Kazakh MPDeputy of the Majilis of the Parliament of Kazakhstan from the República party Aidarbek Khojanazarov believes that the export of Kazakh grain to the European Union is under threat due to protests of European farmers against the import of cheap agricultural products. The deputy recalled that, amid protests, the European Union is preparing to impose duties on grain imports from Russia and Belarus in the amount of 95 euros per metric tonne for grains, as well as a duty of 50% on oilseeds and processed products.“This situation also poses a risk for Kazakhstan, since our country is an exporter of grain and its processed products to European countries through the territory of the Russian Federation,” Khojanazarov is quoted as saying in the party’s press release.“A duty of this size could completely stop the export of grain to European countries from our agricultural producers and there is a risk of losing traditional markets in Europe. As for the domestic market, prices will fall due to an oversupply. In turn, this will lead to dumping on the domestic market from the neighboring countries,” the deputy concluded. This year there are mass protests by agricultural producers who express dissatisfaction with the “green” course of the European Commission, the rise in prices of material and technical resources against the backdrop of duty-free agricultural products coming from Ukraine.According to the European Commission, the European Union imported 377,877 tonnes of durum wheat and 7,183 tonnes of rye from Kazakhstan in the 2023/2024 marketing year. Kazakhstan is among the top five countries supplying durum wheat to the European Union. (ICE ALMATY)
