Tokayev unveils plans to build 20 new and reconstruct 15 reservoirs in KazakhstanPresident Kassym-Jomart Tokayev announced plans for the construction of 20 new reservoirs and the reconstruction of 15 existing ones to significantly mitigate the risk of flooding in over 130 settlements."The majority of our country's dams and reservoirs were built between the 1950s and 1970s. The lack of modern water management systems exacerbated the recent floods far beyond their potential impact. Therefore, in 11 regions of Kazakhstan, we will build 20 new reservoirs and reconstruct 15 existing ones. These measures will mitigate the risk of flooding in 134 settlements," President Tokayev announced during the Assembly of the People of Kazakhstan session on Thursday.He also highlighted the need for Kazakhstan to develop an effective system for dealing with natural disasters. This requires enhancing the state's collaboration with science to implement preventive measures against natural disasters"At my request, the Kazakh Irrigation and Construction Institute in Taraz will be reinstated, and the Institute of Seismology in Almaty will receive increased support for climate change research," the president said. He also emphasized the urgent need to overhaul the water management system, including entities like Kazvodkhoz and Nura Group water pipeline.Furthermore, President Tokayev pledged to incorporate international best practices into the Concept for the Development of Water Resources Management.
