Kazakhstan becomes ICAO’s partner in sustainable aviation fuelsKazakhstan’s Ministry of Transport and ICAO have signed an agreement on Kazakhstan’s accession to the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Program for Assistance, Capacity-building and Training for Sustainable Aviation Fuels (ACT-SAF), the press service of the ministry said in a Tuesday press release.Kazakhstan has become the first of the CIS countries to join this Program. The document was signed by Kazakh Deputy Minister of Transport Talgat Lastayev and ICAO Regional Director for Europe and North Atlantic Nicolas Rallo, the press release says.According to the signed document, ICAO will support Kazakhstan’s involvement in the ACT-SAF Program, including the exchange of best practices and relevant information and the participation in educational seminars and training courses. ICAO will also provide Kazakhstan technical assistance as necessary for SAF integration into the republic’s action plans and for the implementation of SAF projects.The ICAO member states adopted a collective long-term global aspirational goal (LTAG) of net-zero carbon emissions for international flight operations by 2050.The airports of Kazakhstan will gradually switch to JET A-1 aviation fuel, which is more ecofriendly jet fuel used in more than 70 countries of the world. The Almaty airport is expected to switch to Jet A-1 in June 2024 after its refueling complex has been upgraded.Kazakhstan’s refineries earlier announced their plans to start producing Jet A-1 fuel.
