LEBANON: CONSTRUCTION PERMITS FROM OEAB JUMP BY 20% IN THE FIRST FOUR MONTHS OF 2024

Construction permits in the first four months of 2024 jumped by 20.4% against figures from the same period ofthe year prior, as per figures from the Order of Engineers and Architects of Beirut (OEAB).Construction permits for the first four months of 2024 increased to 1,564,709 m2, up from 1,299,074 m2 in the firstfour months of 2023. This shows an improvement of construction activity during the period following a stuntingof activity between 2022 and 2023.  In details, looking at the regional distribution of construction permits in the first four months of 2024, Mount Lebanon took the lion’s share with 31.6% of total reaching 494,508 m2 during the period. South Lebanon and  Bekaa followed with 27.6% of total (432,369 m2) and 21.0% of total (328,167 m2) in the first four months of 2024 respectively. The Nabattiyeh region came in fourth with 12.7% (198,399 m2) of total construction permits. Theregion of Beirut had a contribution of 6.0% (93,382 m2) of the total followed by North Lebanon with a contributionof 1.1% (17,884 m2) of total.  This jump in construction permits was mostly due to a 23.3% increase in construction permits for South Lebanon  (weight of 27.6%) as well as increases of 122.2% and 141.2% respectively for the Bekaa region (weight of 21.0%)  and Beirut (weight of 6.0%). These increases were marginally offset by a 10.9% decrease in construction permits  for the Mount Lebanon region (weight of 31.6%) and a 0.2% decrease in construction permits for the Nabattiyeh  region (weight of 12.7%).
