ETHIOPIA: LOGISTICS SECTOR GETS A BOOST AS RAILWAY AND SHIPPING LINES JOIN FORCE
Ethiopia's logistics sector is set for an upgrade following an agreement signed between the Ethiopia-Djibouti Standard Gauge Railway Share Company (EDR) and the state-owned Ethiopian Shipping and Logistics (ESL).The partnership aims to streamline the country's logistics network through improved coordination between the two key players. This is expected to enhance the role of the Ethiopia-Djibouti railway, a vital artery for Ethiopia's import and export activities."The agreement will allow us to address bottlenecks across the logistics value chain, ultimately providing more efficient transport services," said Beriso Amelo, CEO of ESL, highlighting the positive impact the collaboration will have on the Ethiopian economy. The 752-kilometer railway, constructed by China, has already become a game-changer for Ethiopia's trade. Over 15% of the country's commerce now flows through this route, which has transported a staggering 680,000 passengers and 9.5 million tons of cargo since its inception. This success is reflected in a 39% annual revenue increase over the past six years. The railway's significance extends beyond sheer volume. It serves as a critical passage for Ethiopia's major export, coffee, with 98% of coffee exports now relying on this efficient and reliable mode of transport. Last month marked a significant milestone as the Chinese consortium responsible for the railway's management officially handed over the reins to Ethiopia and Djibouti, paving the way for a future driven by local expertise.
