Indonesia's Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs is preparing to address the threat posed by the Chinese cross-border trade application, Temu, by strengthening regulations. Regulation of the Ministry of Trade Number 31 of 2023 aims to separate social media and electronic commerce, a move that could disrupt the market and micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in the country. The government is aware of the potential disruptions faced by MSMEs from digital cross-border trade applications, such as TikTok Shop, which has cut distribution channels and imported goods directly from China. The presence of such applications without appropriate regulations could damage the existing market ecosystem, create unfair competition, decrease demand for local products, and even eliminate some jobs in the distribution sector.
