Indonesia is set to purchase the Bergamini-class FREMM frigate, a European multi-mission frigate, from Italy. The acquisition is expected to shake up the ASEAN region, as it is the strongest in the region. The FREMM frigate, equipped with sophisticated weapons, is 140 meters long and 20 meters wide. The acquisition process was quick and efficient, with the Indonesian Navy already purchasing two Paolo Thaon Di Revel class Pattugliatore Polivalente d'Altura (PPA) vessels from the same manufacturer, Fincantieri S.p.A. The decision to acquire the FREMM frigate reflects Indonesia's need for multi-role ships, including full combat capabilities. However, the future of Indonesia's defense is at stake due to potential embargoes with western countries, as seen in the US and UK. Meanwhile, Italy joined the Belt and Road Initiatives (BRI) project in 2019, despite being a leading member of the Western gang. The agreement, signed during Xi Jinping's visit, includes agreements in energy, steel, and gas pipeline sectors. Italy and China also collaborate in various fields, including environment, sustainable energy, health, aviation, space technology, infrastructure, and transportation.
