Ekibastuz power plant shuts down 4 units because of technological accidentA technological accident has happened at Ekibastuz GRES-1, a power plant in the city of Ekibastuz in the Pavlodar region, leading to the shutdown of four power generation units, the press service of Kazakhstan’s Ministry of Energy said in a Friday press release."On June 28 of this year at 05:24 a.m., a technological failure occurred at Ekibastuz GRES-1 LLP resulting in the shutdown of Units No. 2, 3, 4, 7. The plant has reduced power generation from 2,080 to 320 MW," the press release says.According to the Ministry of Energy, Units No. 2, 4, 8 are currently in operation, producing 971 MW. The other units are being started up.The failure has not affected power supply to the consumers, according to the press release.Ekibastuz GRES-1 is the largest power plant in Kazakhstan and one of the largest coal-fired power plants in the world. Its available capacity is 3,500 MW and its installed capacity is 4,000 MW.In November 2022, a major accident occurred at Ekibastuz GRES-1 leading to disruption of heat supply in the city of Ekibastuz in cold weather with temperatures of 30 degrees below zero.
