MEDINA SEEKS FIRMS FOR QUBA MOSQUE EXPANSION
Madinah Region Development Authority (MRDA) has issued a notice inviting firms to prequalify for a tender to expand the Quba mosque in the Medina region of Saudi Arabia. The prequalification notice was issued in mid-June and the submission deadline is 2 July. MRDA has appointed local consulting firm Jasara as the project management consultant. Jasara has appointed London-based firm HKA to provide specialist procurement and delivery model advice and support the selection of a suitable contracting partner to deliver the project. Dar Al-Omran has prepared the design of the expansion. The Quba mosque is located 5 kilometres to the south of the Prophet’s Mosque in Medina. “The Quba mosque’s expansion is an integral part of MRDA’s broader development plan for [the] Medina region,” MRDA’s statement said. Project background The Quba mosque is considered to be the first mosque established in Islam in 622 AD. The proposed expansion will extend the mosque’s current area of 5,035 square metres (sq m) to 53,000 sq m, increasing its capacity to 66,000 worshippers from 12,000 worshippers. The expansion will also include restoring 57 historical sites and creating three pathways to enhance Medina’s spiritual and cultural landscape. The mosque is currently undergoing rehabilitation works due to be completed this year. (ICE RIYADH)
