KAZAKHSTAN-KARACHAGANAK-EXPANSION
Karachaganak Expansion Project advances with key milestone - KPOOperator of the Karachaganak oil and gas field Karachaganak Petroleum Operating B.V. (KPO) announced major milestone in the first stage of the Karachaganak Expansion Project - the supply of gas to the fifth compressor." Karachaganak Petroleum Operating B.V. (KPO) is proud to announce a major milestone in the Karachaganak Expansion Project (KEP-1A), marking a pivotal moment in Kazakhstan’s energy sector. Fuel gas has been successfully introduced, and the project is now in the final stage of commissioning. In the coming weeks, this will enable the initiation of reservoir injection through the operation of the fifth compressor," the statement says.It is noted that the new compressor is set to significantly boost gas re-injection volumes, maintaining reservoir pressure and extending the field’s liquid production period. The project includes the installation of new gas compression units and gas dehydration units, essential for efficient gas processing and re-injection.According to the Ministry of Energy of Kazakhstan, the residual recoverable reserves of oil and condensate at Karachaganak as of January 1, 2024 amounted to 253.2 million tonnes, the residual recoverable gas reserves at this field were 791.7 billion cubic meters. The Karachaganak field is one of the largest in the world. It is operated by Karachaganak Petroleum Operating B.V., which is comprised of Shell that owns a 29.25% holding in KPO through its 100% affiliate company BG Karachaganak Ltd, Eni (29.25%), Chevron (18%), LUKOIL (13.5%), and KazMunayGas (10%). Karachaganak Petroleum Operating has been developing the Karachaganak field since 1997 on the basis of a 40-year production sharing agreement. In 2023, 12.1 million tonnes of liquid hydrocarbons and 22.4 billion cubic meters of gas were produced at Karachaganak. The volume of gas injection into the reservoir amounted to 12.7 billion cubic meters of gas.The Karachaganak expansion project will help to maintain the production plateau at 11 million tonnes per year. Stage KEP-1A, implementation period - 2020-2025 provides for the commissioning of the fifth gas reinjection compressor, and stage KEP-1B, 2022-2028 - the introduction of an additional sixth gas reinjection compressor.
