OVER 40 PCT OF YOUNG ADULTS LIVE WITH PARENTS IN POLAND - REPORT

In 2022, 42 percent of working Poles aged 25-34 still lived with at least one of their parents, EU data shows.This figure places Poland above the EU average and far behind Finland and Sweden (2 pct) or Germany and France (12 pct), according to Eurofound, the EU Agency for the improvement of living and working conditions, as cited in a study by Otodom real estate platform.A higher percentage of 'nest dwellers' was recorded only in Croatia (65 pct), Slovakia (60 pct), Greece (57 pct), Portugal (52 pct) and Italy (48 pct).According to Poland's Central Statistical Office, cited in Otodom's report, there are around 1.7 million Polish 'nest dwellers'. Compared to 2018, this is a fall of three percentage points and 300,000 people.The list of reasons for "nesting" is headed by financial difficulties, as indicated by 38 percent of respondents to the study, as well as the possibility of saving money by living with family (35 pct).The data presented in the report also shows that in Poland, the average age at which young people move out of the family home is just over 27, compared to 28.2 years in 2022. Young Finns leave the family home statistically at the age of 21, and Croatians at 31.EU statistical agency Eurostat's data, cited by Otodom, show that Poland is currently the leader in housing cost growth in Europe, with prices rising almost continuously for over 10 years.According to data from Otodom Analytics, the average price per square meter of a new flat in Warsaw is PLN 17,500 (EUR 4,079) and in other major cities, between 11,000 (EUR 2,564) to 16,000 (EUR 3,729).The authors of the Otodom study wrote that only 24 percent of Polish 'nest dwellers' believe in the chance of getting a mortgage to buy their first flat in the current economic situation.But, they added, as many as 40 percent are positive about the future, counting on changes in the market and government aid in financing their 'dream home'.
