LITHUANIA BANS FREE SINGLE-USE PLASTIC IN CAFÉS
On July 18, 2024, the Lithuanian parliament, Seimas, passed a law banning the free distribution of single-use plastic packaging at catering places, mass events, and beaches, effective from May 1, 2025. The amendments, proposed by MP Kasparas Adomaitis of the Freedom Party, were supported by a significant majority in the parliament.Initially, the ban was set to begin on November 1, 2024, but it was postponed to give businesses time to adjust. From May 2025, all cafés and restaurants will be required to offer reusable or plastic-free alternatives to single-use plastic containers. Additionally, at mass events and beach catering, single-use plastic dishes will be prohibited unless distributed with a deposit. This change poses a significant challenge for fast-food restaurants, which traditionally rely on disposable packaging. Non-compliance with the ban will result in fines ranging from 1,000 to 5,000 euros. (ICE VARSAVIA)
