CONSORTIUM LED BY DAH WINS CONSULTANCY CONTRACT FOR AFRICA’S BIGGEST AIRPORT
A consortium led by Dar Al Handasah (DAH) Consultants (Shair & Partners) has been awarded the designconsultancy contract by the Ethiopian national carrier Ethiopian Airlines for its new hub airport in Abusera. Oncompletion, this airport is set to be the largest in Africa. According to DAH, consortium members include UK-based groups Zaha Hadid Architects (ZHA) and Pascall+Watson Architects as well as US aviation consulting firm Landrum&Brown and San Francisco-based global engineering firm TY Lin. In details, the construction of the airport will be carried out in two phases, the first of which is designed to handle 60 million passengers annually upon completion in circa 2029. This 60 million passenger number is almost three folds that of Africa’s current busiest airport and is set to create thousands of jobs in order to serve Ethiopian Airlines’ expanding customer base and fleet. Following the completion of all the phases, the airport will be able to serve 110 million passengers annually. This comes as Abusera is a critical element of Ethiopian Airlines’ 15 year strategic plan to become one of the most competitive aviation groups in the world. Collectively, this consortium will cover technical advisory, engineering, project management and constructionsupervision services for 600,000 sqm of passenger facilities, 126,000 sqm of airline support facilities, twoCode 4E parallel runways along with associated airfield infrastructure and other major airport facilities andinfrastructure.
