CROATIA: TRADE DEFICIT WIDENS AS EXPORTS DECREASE AND IMPORTS INCREASE IN 1H2024
The State Bureau of Statistics (DZS) released on 9 August its preliminary data from the first six months of this year, which shows that Croatian merchandise exports totaled EUR 11.5 billion, a slight decrease of 0.3% from the same period last year, while imports rose by 4.2% to EUR 21.1 billion, leading to a foreign trade deficit of EUR 9.6 billion with export coverage of imports at 54.4%, while in the first six months of last year the coverage was 56.9%, Croatian media report. The data also shows varying trends in trade with the European Union (EU) and non-EU countries, with a decline in exports to EU member states and an increase in exports to non-EU countries.According to the preliminary DZS data, exports to EU member states in the first six months of this year amounted to EUR 7.6 billion, which is a 3.9% decrease compared to the same period last year. Meanwhile, the value of imported goods from EU member states increased by 8.2%, reaching EUR 16.6 billion. The statistical data also shows that exports to non-EU countries increased by 7.6% to a total of EUR 3.8 billion, while the imports of goods from these countries were down 8.2%, amounting to EUR 4.5 billion.The DZS initial data shows that in the first six months of this year Croatian exports to the EU member states were valued at EUR 7.6 billion, or 3.9% less than in the same period of last year, while the value of goods imported to Croatia from the EU member states showed an increase of 8.2% to a total of EUR 16.6 billion. The data also showed that exports to non-EU countries had increased by 7.6% to a total EUR 3.8 billion, while the imports of goods to Croatia from those countries was down by 8.2% to EUR 4.5 billion.Revised data released by the DZS on merchandise trade for the first five months of this year, showing that exports remained unchanged from the same period in 2023 at EUR 9.6 billion, while imports rose by 5.4% to EUR 17.6 billion. Meanwhile, the foreign trade deficit for this period amounted to EUR 8 billion, with export coverage of imports at 54.4%. (ICE ZAGABRIA)
