POLES CONTINUE TO READ AS BOOKSHOPS DISAPPEAR
The latest data compiled by Dun & Bradstreet Poland show that since the beginning of the year, 23 bookshops have discontinued their activities, with 130 bookshops suspending their activities, which makes them rather unlikely to get back in business. D&B’s spokesman Tomasz Starzyk also notes that since 2010, the bookshop market has been shrinking by 1 % a year and since then, nearly 1,000 bookshops have disappeared from the market, mainly small shops that are unable to compete with retail chains and e-stores. Meanwhile, the latest data released by the National Library show that book readership in Poland is on the rise, especially among young people. In detail, last year 43 % of Poles read at least one book, 9 % more than in 2022 and the figure was also the highest in a decade. (ICE VARSAVIA)
