SPAR WILL NOT DISAPPEAR FROM POLAND, BUT IT WILL CHANGE ITS OWNER.
Spar Group has signed a preliminary agreement with GK Specjał for the sale of all its shares in Spar Polska. The finalization of the agreement is subject to the fulfillment of certain conditions by both parties, as well as obtaining the necessary approvals from the Antimonopoly Office. The Spar Group entered Poland in 2019 with the takeover of the Piotr i Paweł chain of stores and the acquisition of a license to operate the Spar brand in our country. There are currently around 200 Spar stores in Poland (Spar Express, Spar mini, Supermarket Spar and Eurospar), all of which were put up for sale, as of autumn 2023.As indicated, the transaction concerns the sale of shares - this means that the entire chain under the Spar brand will continue to operate along with stores under this brand. The Specjał Capital Group (GK Specjał) was established in 1990 on the initiative of the owner and current CEO Krzysztof Tokarz. The company is a wholesaler, but also an operator of many franchise networks operating under the brands, including Nasz Sklep, Nasz Sklep Express, Livio and Rabat Detal. In recent years, Specjał has been actively consolidating the market. Now, as it turns out, GK Specjał will take over Spar stores, thanks to which the brand will return to a Polish owner. In the past Spar stores were once marketed under the "Piotr i Paweł" brand, which, however, did not survive the test of time. The Woś family, owners of "Piotr i Paweł", sold these stores to the Spar Group (based in South Africa), which changed the brand to Spar, Eurospar and Spar Express. Thanks to Grupa Kapitałowa Specjał, the brand will return to Polish owners. (ICE VARSAVIA)
