INDONESIA-EU CEPA NEGOTIATIONS WILL CONCLUDE IN SEPTEMBER 2024
Negotiation on the Indonesia-European Union Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (IEU-CEPA) is almost 90 percent complete and is expected to be finalised this month, said Minister of Trade, Zulkifli Hasan, on Wednesday (4/9). He previously made a similar statement emphasising that the IEU-CEPA negotiations must conclude before President-elect Prabowo Subianto's new government takes office in October. Hasan highlighted the importance of further improving Indonesia’s trade balance, which has experienced a surplus for 51 consecutive months, by removing trade barriers through diplomatic efforts and trade agreements. Special Advisor for International Trade to the Trade Minister, Bara Krishna Hasibuan, stressed the importance of the EU as a key trade partner. According to Hasibuan, the IEU-CEPA is expected to help Indonesia and the EU bridge differences on the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) and Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM). Similarly, Deputy Head of Trade Affairs at the Indonesian Employer’s Association (APINDO), Adhi S. Lukman, also expects the IEU-CEPA to help Indonesian products access the European market despite the EUDR which he deems to be a discriminatory policy.
