AZERBAIJAN-ASIA-ENERGY-AGREEMENT

Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan will ink in Nov agreement on strategic partnership in energyAzerbaijan, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan will conclude an intergovernmental agreement on strategic partnership in green energy development, Azerbaijani Energy Minister Parviz Shahbazov said.The document will be signed in November in Baku during the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29)."Azerbaijan is an important part of the new energy corridor initiative, which will start in Central Asia. (...) One of our objectives for the future [in the context of this project] is to set up a joint venture, which will be headquartered in Baku. Our plans for COP29 also include the signing of an intergovernmental agreement on strategic partnership in development and transportation of green energy between Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan during the investment forum on energy transportation for Central Asia," Shahbazov wrote in his article published in the official press on Friday.From the practical point of view, the sides are also discussing a possibility of connecting the green energy corridor Caspian-Black Sea- Europe with Central Asia, he added.As reported earlier, the draft agreement between the three countries on strategic partnership in development and transportation of green energy declares the parties’ intention to organize clean energy supplies to Europe and other regions, to promote new technologies and to improve energy efficiency and energy conservation.The agreement will be concluded for an indefinite period of time.On May 1, 2024, the energy ministers of Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan and Uzbekistan signed a memorandum of cooperation aimed to unite their power grids. The document was sealed during an international investment forum in Tashkent. The parties to the memorandum agreed to explore a possibility of connecting their power grids through a high-voltage cable that would be laid along the bottom of the Caspian Sea to enable in the future green energy supplies from Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan to Europe.The 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change will beheld in Azerbaijan on November 11-12, 2024.
