Kazakhstan will build over 40 water reservoirs in 2024-2028Kazakhstan will build as many as 42 new water reservoirs in 2024-2028 as part of its water development plan, the press service of the government said in a statement following the meeting of the Water Council.The plan also provides for overhaul of 37 hydraulic structures and construction of about 14,000 km of irrigation canals. During the first phase of the plan, which starts in 2025, as many as 11 construction and overhaul projects will be launched, 3,452 km of irrigation canals will be modernized in six regions, and a new water supply facility will be built near Astana.Prime Minister Olzhas Bektenov said at the meeting that the function to subsidize water supply services for the agricultural products and to compensate for costs associated with investment in water saving technologies will have been transferred from the Ministry of Agriculture to the Ministry of Water Resources by the end of this year.In order to improve the monitoring and management of subsoil waters, the government created in April a national hydrogeological service called KazHydroGeology. In addition, a new information management system, flood.gharysh.kz, is being developed for flood forecasting and modelling. This system will have been launched by the end of the year, according to the statement.The Majilis, the lower chamber of the parliament, is discussing a Water Code, which is aimed to realize the water potential of the country and to modernize the water management system. The focus is on protection of the republic’s water resources, introduction of modern water saving technologies and enhancement of responsibility in the water sector, the statement says.Also, the government provided in June of this year 51.7 billion tenge to purchase 757 specialized vehicles. Out of the 1440 vehicles available today, more than 50% need replacing. (ICE ALMATY)
