JEONNAM PROVINCE HOSTS FIRST ‘JEONNAM CLEAN HYDROGEN INTERNATIONAL FORUM’ IN GW

16 Institutions Participate in Agreement for Clean Hydrogen Pipeline  Network in Yeosu and Gwangyang On the 4th, Jeonnam Province held the inaugural Jeonnam Clean Hydrogen  International Forum at the Seonghwang Sports Center in Gwangyang. At the  event, domestic and international experts discussed strategies for developing  Jeonnam’s hydrogen industry to lead the region towards becoming a global  hub for the hydrogen economy amid the carbon-neutral and energy  transition era. The forum was co-hosted by Jeonnam Province and the Administrative  Council of Yeosu, Suncheon, and Gwangyang, and was organized by the city  of Gwangyang and the Green Energy Research Institute. Approximately 300 people attended, including Kim Yeong-rok, Governor of  Jeonnam Province; Jeong In-hwa, Mayor of Gwangyang; Jeong Gi-myeong,  Mayor of Yeosu; representatives from energy companies, research  institutions, academia, university students, and local residents. Under the theme “Opening the Future with Hydrogen, Jeonnam as the  Energy Capital,” the event featured a keynote speech on “Domestic  Hydrogen Policy and Prospects” by Moon Jae-do from the Energy Valley  Forum. This was followed by presentations by Angelo Moreno, a director  from H2IT, the Italian Hydrogen Association, on “Italy’s Hydrogen Policy  and the Current Status of the European Hydrogen Transport Infrastructure  Project,” and Yosuke Fujii, a lead researcher at Japan’s NEDO, on “Japan’s  Hydrogen Strategy and Korea-Japan Cooperation Opportunities.” Hanjong  Hee, a distinguished professor at Korea Energy University, chaired a panel  discussion on “Opening the Future with Hydrogen, Jeonnam as the Energy  Capital.” The agreement for constructing a clean hydrogen pipeline network in Yeosu  and Gwangyang, led by Jeonnam Province, involved 16 institutions, including  the cities of Yeosu, Suncheon, and Gwangyang, Yeosu Industrial Complex  companies, and three power generation companies: Korea South-East Power,  Korea East-West Power, and Korea Western Power. This initiative aims to  establish a foundation for the hydrogen economy in Jeonnam through carbon  neutrality and hydrogen industry development in the Gwangyang Bay area. Governor Kim Yeong-rok outlined a vision to transform the chemical and  steel-focused national industrial complexes in the Gwangyang Bay area into green industrial complexes, establishing clean hydrogen production and power  generation sites connected to the large-scale offshore wind farms currently  being built in the eastern and western regions. He committed to installing  the nation’s first clean hydrogen supply pipeline network, positioning  Jeonnam as a global hydrogen economy hub. He further emphasized, “In October, Jeonnam Province held the ‘Energy  Week’ event in Austria, known as the green heart of Europe, and joined the  ‘International Climate Network World Cities Alliance.’ We are committed to  achieving carbon neutrality by pioneering the global energy market and  cooperating with local governments worldwide.” The ‘Jeonnam Clean Hydrogen International Forum’ is set to continue as a  new policy initiative for Jeonnam Province, beginning in Gwangyang this  year, followed by Suncheon in 2025 and Yeosu in 2026.
