Kazakhstan ratifies agreement with Uzbekistan on cooperation in ecology, environmental protection.President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev signed the law On ratification of the agreement between the Government of the Republic of Kazakhstan and the Government of the Republic of Uzbekistan on cooperation in the field of ecology and environmental protection", the press service of the head of state reported.The document aims to update the 1997 agreement and expand cooperation in environmental protection.One of the new areas of cooperation is the launch of joint educational programs, scientific research, training and popularization of the results of joint activities in the field of environmental protection.Another area of cooperation with Uzbekistan is the protection of ecosystems from degradation and adaptation to climate change.On climate issues, cooperation with the Uzbek side consists of exchanging best practices in reducing and absorbing greenhouse gas emissions and adapting to climate change. This will allow the Kazakh and Uzbek sides to coordinate their actions to mitigate the consequences of the ecological crisis of the Aral Sea and mitigate sand and salt storms by planting saxaul.According to Kazakhstan's Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources, the total area of the Aral Sea's desiccated soil is now around 6 million hectares, of which 2.8 million hectares are in Kazakhstan.The agreement also provides for the coordination of measures to protect migratory animals.
