ADM EXPO HIGHLIGHTS: AUTOMATION, INNOVATION

Attendees had the chance to interact directly with over 250 suppliers, watch live demos and discover the latest manufacturing solutions.I attended a series of French-language panel discussions at the Centre Stage, gathering insights for those unable to participate. Here are a few of my key takeaways in English. Panel: Automation trends and embracing roboticsIn a panel session hosted by Carl Fugère with REAI (the Grouping of Industrial Automation Companies), industry leaders gathered to discuss the latest trends in automation and the factors holding manufacturers back from fully embracing robotics.Martin Noel, regional director at FANUC Canada, advised a risk-gain analysis approach for automation, focusing on low-hanging-fruit projects that offer high gains with minimal risk. By beginning with these straightforward projects, organizations can establish a foundation in automation. This experience prepares them to tackle more complex projects as the associated risk increases.AdvertisementHe also emphasized that automation isn’t about replacing people; instead, it enhances productivity by allowing a dual-shift model. During the day, workers program and set up robotics, while at night, these machines operate autonomously, effectively doubling production capabilities.Luc Vanden-Abeele, marketing manager at NūMove Robotics & Vision, emphasized that successful automation isn’t as simple as replacing a person with a robot; rather, it’s a strategic process to ensure that the automation is tailored and relevant to each application. Not all automation solutions are created equal—identifying and prioritizing the right applications is essential for effective implementation.Ted Sarazin, regional sales manager at Beckhoff Canada, recognized that a primary concern among his clients is the capital investment required for automation implementations. To address this, he focuses on strategies that ensure a swift return on investment, emphasizing cost-effective solutions that deliver rapid and measurable benefits. Panel: Inside Quebec’s innovation zonesAnother panel session discussed how Quebec’s innovation zones are collaborating. NGen’s John Cigana, the panel moderator, summarized why collaboration is so critical: alone we go fast, but together we go the distance. (ICE TORONTO)
