INDONESIA'S PALM LEAF EXPORT POTENTIAL GAINS MOMENTUM

Indonesia holds significant potential for palm leaf exports, as highlighted by Setiyono, Chair of the Indonesian Association of Oil Palm Farmers (Aspekpir). Palm leaves are produced by nearly 500 oil palm farmer cooperatives and thousands of smallholder groups under Aspekpir. In 2023, Indonesia's palm and nipa leaf exports rose by 11.44% year-on-year (yoy) to USD 29.32 million, with 98.24% of these exports comprising brooms made from palm leaf branches, valued at USD 28.8 million. However, from January to June 2024, exports fell by 27.59% yoy to USD 10.18 million. To address this, the integration of efficient technology for palm leaf processing is anticipated to enhance productivity and meet export demands effectively. To strengthen this sector, the Palm Oil Plantation Fund Management Agency (BPDPKS) and Aspekpir have collaborated to expand market access for small and medium enterprises (SMEs) through workshops held in Siak, Riau, on 18–19 November 2023. The event focused on strategies for SMEs to penetrate the palm leaf export market and featured industry experts. The palm oil industry contributes significantly to Indonesia's economy, generating USD 21.4 billion in foreign exchange during 2024 and employing 16.5 million workers. Innovations such as the Wardani palm leaf processing machine, launched in Siak, can process 30 kg of palm leaves per hour, providing cooperatives with tools to improve production efficiency. The government also supports biodiesel programs, saving IDR 120 trillion in solar imports in 2023. These initiatives underscore the vital role of palm oil derivatives in Indonesia's economic growth.Source: https://investor.id/business/380888/ri-miliki-potensi-besar-untuk-ekspor-lidi-sawit (ICE GIACARTA)
