THE WINNERS AND LOSERS OF THE LIBERALS' HOLIDAY TAX BREAK AND CASH GIVEAWAY
The Liberals' holiday tax break and cash giveaway offer mixed outcomes across Canada. In provinces with a harmonized sales tax (HST) like Ontario and Atlantic Canada, residents benefit more as the 15% HST is waived on eligible items. In provinces like Manitoba and B.C., however, relief is limited to the 5% GST unless provincial governments waive their sales taxes. Alongside this, $250 cheques will go to working Canadians earning up to $150,000, excluding retirees and those on social assistance, sparking criticism for neglecting fixed-income groups. Prime Minister Trudeau defended the focus on workers, citing prior support for seniors and families. The initiatives, costing $6.3 billion, include GST breaks on children’s goods, restaurant meals, beer, wine, and Christmas items. (ICE TORONTO)
