Kazakhstan and China plan trial shipment of lithium-ion batteries via Trans-Caspian CorridorKazakhstan and China have agreed to launch a trial shipment of lithium-ion batteries along the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route (TITR) this December.The announcement came from Kazakhstan's Ministry of Transport following high-level talks in Beijing on December 5. The agreement was finalized during discussions between Kazakhstan's Minister of Transport Marat Karabayev and China's Minister of Transport Liu Wei."The sides agreed during the talks to advance TITR shipments, strengthen joint freight transportation through the corridor, and establish an ad-hoc group to ensure its smooth operation. Under these agreements, a trial shipment of lithium-ion batteries from China via the route is planned for December," stated the ministry.In 2024, rail freight volumes between Kazakhstan and China rose by 13%, reaching 26.6 million tonnes in the first ten months. Meanwhile, road freight saw a 60% surge in the third quarter, totaling 1.9 million tonnes. Shipments from China via the TITR to Europe exceeded 27,000 TEUs, a remarkable 25-fold increase compared to the same period last year.In addition to the pilot shipment, discussions between the two sides included plans to explore new transport routes and leverage transboundary rivers for freight movement.
