LEATHER, GARMENT EXPORTS UP 24% IN 9 MONTHS
Leather and garment exports surged 24 percent during the past nine months of the year, compared to the same period in 2023, sector representative of the Jordan Chamber of Industry Ihab Qadri said Sunday. The sector's exports grew about JD0.250 billion in the first nine months of the year, reaching JD1.31 billion, due to a 26% growth in clothing and accessories exports, he pointed out.Qadri said clothing and accessories accounted for 95% of the sector's total exports, that mainly go to the US market. He said the rise was a result of a return of the US market, which accounts for 78 percent of the sector's exports, to a growth path, on the one hand, and an expansion in non-traditional markets on the other, most notably European Union countries, namely the Netherlands and Belgium. The size of exports in the past nine months was "qualitative", he said, adding that if it remains steady, exports will hit "historic" annual figures by the end of the year, meeting pending positive expectations.Qadri also said the exports' growth directly impacts the job market, noting that 1,500 Jordanians were employed in the past nine months, according to Social Security data.
