Alibaba to pay VAT in KazakhstanChinese internet giant Alibaba International Digital Commerce Group will register as a VAT payer in Kazakhstan, the State Revenue Committee (SRC) of the republic's Ministry of Finance reported."During the meeting, the SRC and Alibaba International discussed the development of international taxation in the digital economy, as well as recent changes in legislation and tax administration in the field of e-commerce in Kazakhstan. Following the meeting, it was decided to conditionally register Alibaba International Digital Commerce Group as a VAT payer," the SRC said in a statement.Since the beginning of 2022, Kazakhstan has been subject to the so-called "Google tax" or "digital tax", which requires the payment of 12% VAT by international companies providing digital services to Kazakhstani consumers. This includes foreign trading platforms (marketplaces). To do this, companies must go through the procedure of conditional registration as a VAT payer: sending a letter of confirmation to the State Revenue Committee. Companies that already pay the "digital tax" include Google, Apple, Netflix, Amazon, Temu and others. (ICE ALMATY)
