TESLA POISED TO OVERTAKE HYUNDAI AS SECOND LARGEST ELECTRIC VEHICLE BRAND IN KO

Tesla is poised to overtake Hyundai Motor Company (excluding Genesis) to  take second place in the domestic electric vehicle market. Despite adverse  conditions such as the electric vehicle chasm (temporary demand stagnation)  and slowdown in domestic consumption, Tesla has surpassed 20,000 new  registrations for the first time since its entry into Korea in 2017. If Tesla  maintains its cumulative second place for the remaining month of this year,  it will surpass Hyundai Motor Company, marking its top two position in the  domestic electric vehicle market for the first time in four years since 2020. According to KAIJY Data Research Institute on the 15th, Tesla's electric  vehicles registered from January to November this year totaled 28,498,  narrowly surpassing Hyundai Motor Company (28,463) by just 35 vehicles to  claim second place. Kia holds first place with 34,384 vehicles. KG Mobility  follows in fourth place with 6,016 vehicles, followed by BMW (5,974),  Mercedes-Benz (4,409), Audi (3,313), and Volkswagen (2,460), which  ranked fifth to eighth, respectively. Hyundai Motor Company’s premium  brand Genesis is ninth (1,405 vehicles), and Porsche rounds out the top ten  (915 vehicles). In 2020, Tesla led with 11,826 vehicles, surpassing Hyundai Motor Company  (9,604 vehicles) and Kia (1,509 vehicles), but has remained in third place  for the past three years. In 2021, Hyundai Motor Company and Kia  effectively targeted both domestic and international markets by launching  their first dedicated electric vehicles, the Ioniq 5 and the EV6, respectively. Hyundai Motor Company and Kia occupied the first and second spots in  2021 (24,042 vehicles and 18,087 vehicles, respectively) and in 2022 (38,336  vehicles and 34,146 vehicles, respectively). Last year, Kia held first place  (35,576 vehicles), while Hyundai Motor Company came in second (28,384  vehicles). In contrast, Tesla did not escape the range of around 15,000  vehicles from 2021 to 2023. However, this year, Tesla is aiming to reclaim second place by approaching  30,000 new registrations. The total number of new registrations for electric  passenger vehicles rose from 31,297 vehicles in 2020 to 123,908 vehicles in  2022, before declining to 115,822 vehicles last year, with a cumulative total of 117,160 vehicles as of November this year. The domestic electric vehicle  market has faced prolonged chasm conditions along with a sluggish domestic  market. Tesla's resurgence is led by its sports utility vehicle, the Model Y (17,671  vehicles), and the mid-size sedan, the Model 3 (10,319 vehicles). This year,  Tesla Korea reduced the price of the Model Y rear-wheel drive by 2  million won twice, bringing it down to 52.99 million won, and released a  partial modification model of the Model 3 last April.
