SAMSUNG, GOOGLE, AND QUALCOMM UNVEIL ANDROID XR PLATFORM

Samsung Electronics, in collaboration with Google and Qualcomm, hosted the  “XR Unlocked” event on Dec. 12 (local time) at Google’s New York campus,  introducing the “Android XR” platform and its first device, codenamed  “Project Moohan,” scheduled for release next year. Extended reality (XR) technology provides immersive experiences that  integrate the physical and virtual worlds, allowing users to engage multiple  senses such as sight, sound, and movement. This innovation is expected to  transform various aspects of daily life, including work, education,  entertainment, gaming, and healthcare. The newly unveiled Android XR platform, developed collaboratively by  Samsung, Google, and Qualcomm, focuses on open innovation. Powered by multi-modal AI, it allows users to engage with both physical  and virtual environments using a variety of sensory inputs. Integrated with  Google’s Gemini technology, the platform features an AI agent capable of  delivering natural, intuitive conversational experiences. This AI enhances  user interaction by offering personalized responses based on context and  behavior. Android XR builds on the existing Android, Open XR, virtual reality (VR),  and mobile augmented reality (AR) ecosystems, enhancing its capabilities  and extending its reach. Samsung and Google aim to further grow the  platform by collaborating with third-party app developers and service  providers to offer a wider variety of content. A key feature of Android XR is its versatility, supporting a range of devices  such as headsets and smart glasses. This flexibility ensures compatibility  with diverse use cases and scenarios, broadening the platform’s appeal. The first device to utilize Android XR, Project Moohan, is a headset set for  release in 2025. Living up to its name, which means “infinite” in Korean, the  device is designed to overcome physical boundaries and provide highly  immersive experiences.Choi Won-joon, executive vice president and head of the development team  at Samsung’s Mobile eXperience division, spoke at the event, emphasizing the  transformative potential of XR. “XR will create a new dimension by seamlessly connecting the physical and  virtual worlds, breaking down physical barriers,” he said. “By combining  advanced XR technology with multimodal AI that understands context, we  have the ideal foundation for developing innovative new device designs.” (ICE SEOUL)
