FARM ALCOHOL SALES PROPOSAL FACES EU SCRUTINY FROM PORTUGAL
The Government is set to decide on allowing small-scale sales of alcohol from farms, a proposal that has faced criticism from Portugal, which argues it violates EU regulations, DN reports. The draft law stipulates that wine can only be sold where the grapes are grown. The Government aims to use this proposal to enhance local tourism and promote interest in Swedish food and beverage culture. A spokesperson for the Minister for Social Affairs and Public Health, Jakob Forssmed (KD), indicated that requiring local production would not benefit the industry or create jobs. This proposal could challenge Sweden's alcohol monopoly, as it is one of the few EU countries with such strict sales regulations. The EU Commission is expected to announce its decision by 8 January, 2025, considering Portugal's concerns regarding the proposed sales channels. (ICE STOCCOLMA)
