478 WORKERS LAID OFF FROM PETRA HOTELS DUE TO DECREASE IN TOURISTS FOLLOWING WAR

Fares Braizat, Commissioner of Petra Development and Tourism Authority, Fares Braizat, reported on Tuesday that Petra welcomed 250 single-day visitors via the AROYA cruise ship from Jeddah in Saudi Arabia to Aqaba. He emphasized the importance of tourism for Petra, especially with the decline in visitors attributed to the Israeli war in Gaza. In 2024, Petra only saw 26% of the foreign visitors it received in 2023. The AROYA cruise ship arrived in Aqaba from Jeddah, carrying 2451 tourists, mainly of Saudi nationality, and 1498 crew members. Braizat acknowledged that Petra's tourism sector suffered losses, leading to the layoff of approximately 478 hotel workers. He explained that more layoffs occurred during the absence of programs like "Our Jordan is Paradise", which later helped mitigate the situation. However, with the cessation of the program, Braizat anticipated another round of layoffs in the near future. (ICE AMMAN)
