POLAND'S HAS SECOND BIGGEST NUMBER OF FARMS IN EU - EUROSTAT

Poland places second in the European Union as far as the number of farms is concerned and is preceded only by Romania, Eurostat, the EU's stats agency, has reported.Poland also tops the list of EU member countries with regard to the size of farmland owned directly by a farmer, according to the results of the EU agricultural census published by Eurostat on Tuesday.The share of farmland owned by a farm holder reached 75.4 percent in Poland and was the highest in the EU.The EU agricultural census is carried out every 10 years in all 27 EU countries and some EFTA countries. It provides information on a wide range of topics on the farming sector and gives a snapshot of European farms. It is the only source that provides statistical information at the most detailed geographical level on the European farming sector as a whole.According to the 2020 census, there are nearly 9.1 million farms in the EU. Nearly one-third (32 percent) of them are in Romania and 14 percent in Poland. Italy came third (12 percent) and was followed by Spain (10 percent) and Greece (6 percent).In 2020, Poland's agricultural sector employed 9 percent of all working Poles while in Romania this percentage amounted to 20.9.Small farms accounted for 52 percent of the total number of farms in Poland.
