MARCO BELLOCCHIO: A LEAP IN THE DARK

Marco Bellocchio, one of Italy’s most adventurous filmmakers, has spent six decades crafting a body of work marked by intelligence, moral acuity, and psychological depth. Born in 1939 in Bobbio, Emilia-Romagna, Bellocchio emerged as a radical voice in post-Neorealist Italian cinema alongside Pier Paolo Pasolini and Bernardo Bertolucci. His explosive debut, Fists in the Pocket (1965), remains a landmark in cinematic history, blending familial dysfunction, rebellion, and psychological nuance. Over his prolific career, Bellocchio has explored a range of genres and styles, from biting satires and psychological dramas to historical epics and militant documentaries. His films delve deeply into themes of institutional repression, political subversion, and personal identity while maintaining a distinctly Italian yet universal resonance. Bellocchio’s work often probes the darker side of existence—mental illness, trauma, and injustice—while also offering moments of grace, sensuality, and dreamlike beauty. This retrospective comes at a fertile moment in Bellocchio’s career, showcasing recent masterworks like Kidnapped (2023) and celebrating his remarkable ability to reinvent himself while remaining true to his artistic roots. Presented in collaboration with Cinecittà, the Istituto Italiano di Cultura, and the Cinémathèque québécoise, the series highlights Bellocchio’s enduring impact. Special guest Pier Giorgio Bellocchio, the director’s son and frequent actor, will attend the launch. A free publication by Cinecittà will accompany the retrospective, providing further insight into a filmmaker who continues to challenge conventions and grapple with life’s contradictions at 85.
