Almaty CHP-2 gas conversion cost rises to 388 billion tengeThe cost of fully converting Almaty’s CHP-2 to gas has risen to 388 billion tenge, Kazakhstan’s Energy Minister Almasadam Satkaliyev announced."According to a state audit conducted on September 27, 2024, the project cost is estimated at 388 billion tenge," Satkaliyev revealed during a public meeting with Almaty residents.The latest estimate reflects a 17.6% increase from the 330 billion tenge forecast earlier this year by Samruk-Energo CEO Kairat Maksutov. Back in June 2022, the project was valued at 324 billion tenge.The project is set for completion by 2026. Once operational, the project is expected to slash harmful emissions from CHP-2 from 37,300 to just 2,700 tonnes per year.Engineering work has advanced, including geological surveys, foundation drilling, and piling for key structures like the relay shield and water-heating boiler buildings. The foundation piles have been installed and reinforced with concrete.In May 2022, President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev instructed officials to expedite the conversion of Almaty CHP-2 to gas. (ICE ALMATY)
