INDONESIA’S CAR SALES PLUNGE 14 PERCENT IN 2024 AS EVS GAIN GROUND
Indonesia's car market has shrunk further, with 2024 marking a second year of falling sales, but electric vehicles are bucking the trend. Nationwide wholesales, or sales from factories to dealers, plunged 13.9 percent from just over 1 million cars in 2023 to 865,723 last year, according to the latest data from the Indonesian Automotive Manufacturers Association (Gaikindo). Meanwhile, retail sales, or direct purchases by consumers, dipped 10.9 percent year-on-year (yoy) to 889,680 units.By contrast, sales of EVs and hybrid cars more than doubled last year, and the two now account for 12 percent of the overall market, the Gaikindo data show.Electric vehicles captured 5 percent of the national car market in 2024, a significant leap driven by a 153 percent sales surge. EV sales jumped to 43,188 units in 2024, a sharp rise from 17,051 units in 2023, when they accounted for just 1.69 percent of total wholesales. Hybrid vehicles also saw growth, with sales reaching 59,903 units, representing a 6.9 percent market share, according to Gaikindo data.Source: https://www.thejakartapost.com/business/2025/01/14/car-sales-plunge-14-percent-in-2024-as-evs-gain-ground.html (ICE GIACARTA)
