IAN D’AGATA REVIEWS FIVE DECADES OF ORNELLAIA HISTORY AND ITS WINES: 1985-2021

First produced in 1985, Ornellaia is one of Italy’s most renowned red wines, coveted by collectors and wine lovers worldwide. In just forty years—a brief time compared to some of France’s historic wineries—the Tenuta dell’Ornellaia (Italian for "estate") has become an icon of Italian winemaking. The estate is also famous for Masseto, a 100% Merlot wine, which since 2019 has been produced at its dedicated winery. Few estates globally can claim to produce two such iconic wines, a distinction Ornellaia rightly deserves.Having Italian parents, I was fortunate to experience the renaissance of Italian wine firsthand, spending summers in Italy during the 1970s and living there in the 1980s. My connection with Ornellaia runs deep; I have likely attended more vertical tastings of this wine than most, including a rare chance to taste Masseto before its official release. At a dinner in Rome in 1986, I was served a rare Ornellaia Merlot, produced in only 600 bottles—a precursor to Masseto, whose first vintage debuted in 1987. (ICE TORONTO)
