JEDDAH HISTORIC DISTRICT PROGRAM LAUNCHES PHASE II OF AL-ARBAEEN LAGOON PROJECT

The Jeddah Historic District Program, spearheaded by the Ministry of Culture, has officially announced the commencement of the second phase of the Al-Arbaeen Lagoon Waterfront Development Project. Phase two focuses on restoring Al-Bunt Port, a site of immense historical significance as a former gateway for pilgrims traveling for Hajj and Umrah by sea. Plans include excavating areas previously filled during urban expansion, reshaping the lagoon, and creating a state-of-the-art marina while improving water quality and flow. The project also aims to reconnect the sea to the Al-Bunt area and the future Red Sea Museum, breathing new life into this cultural landmark. The project will feature an integrated waterfront spanning 5 kilometres, enhanced infrastructure, and modern amenities. Once completed, the area will serve as a sustainable ecosystem, providing economic opportunities, fostering creative projects, and positioning the Jeddah Historic District as a premier global tourist destination. As part of the ongoing work, phase two includes: Dredging: Removing 350,000 cubic metres of material from the lagoon bed to improve environmental sustainability and create a healthier marine ecosystem. Infrastructure enhancements: Constructing a 972-metre marine dock, 490-metre retaining sea walls, and implementing a water aeration system to boost water quality. Lagoon reshaping: Transforming approximately 1 million cubic metre of the lagoon area to enhance functionality and aesthetics. The development will also feature a new marina designed to accommodate large yachts, alongside water taxi stations linking the Jeddah Historic District to Obhur Creek, the Corniche, and other key Red Sea attractions. A 4.4-kilometre public park with dedicated recreational spaces for pedestrians and cyclists, as well as a 1,313-square-metre elevated boardwalk, will further elevate the waterfront’s appeal for residents and tourists. The program also reflected on significant milestones achieved during the preparatory phase. These included the excavation of 185,000 square metres, removal of 200,000 square metres of roads, and levelling of 300,000 square metres. Key demolitions, such as the SAPTCO bus station and a pedestrian bridge, were also completed, and the district’s iconic ship sculpture was carefully relocated and restored. Since its establishment in 2018, the Jeddah Historic District Program has worked to preserve the city’s rich cultural and architectural heritage. The program aims to revitalise the area’s communal spaces, reconnect its urban fabric, and highlight its historic significance as a centre for commerce, culture, and entrepreneurship.   For registration as a supplier: https://balad.com.sa/en/suppliers.html   (ICE RIYADH)
