UZBEKISTAN-KYRGYZSTAN-HPP-PROJECT

Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan to implement Kambarata HPP-1 construction projectUzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan Energy Ministries and the World Bank (WB) defined the main stages and key principles of the joint implementation of the Kambarata HPP-1 construction project, the Uzbek Energy Ministry told Interfax.The meeting in Tashkent was attended by the energy ministers of Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan, Jurabek Mirzamakhmudov and Taalaibek Ibrayev, the deputy energy minister of Kazakhstan, Sungat Yesimkhanov, and the WB's regional director for Central Asia, Tatyana Proskuryakova."During the meeting, the parties agreed on the main principles of joint development and implementation of the Kambarata HPP-1 construction project. The main stages were defined and the project implementation structure was approved," the agency's source said on Tuesday.In June 2024, the heads of the energy departments of the three countries signed an interdepartmental agreement on preparation for implementation of the project for construction and operation of the Kambarata HPP-1 in Kyrgyzstan.The document provided for the establishment of a joint stock company with Kyrgyzstan owning 34% and Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan 33% each. In addition, the guaranteed purchase of the generated electricity in the amount determined by the states was discussed.The main sources of financing for the project are the founders' own funds, as well as loans and grants from international financial institutions and commercial banks.The 1.86 GW hydropower plant is expected to generate 5 billion kWh of electricity per year. According to preliminary estimates, the height of the dam will be 256 m, and the volume of accumulated water may exceed 5 billion cubic metres. In May 2024, it was reported that the World Bank would provide Kyrgyzstan with an additional $13.6 million in technical assistance for the Kambarata HPP-1 construction project. (ICE ALMATY)
