Kazakhstan expects to build first NPP unit within 8 years- Energy MinistryKazakhstan will give contractors the task to build the first unit of the nuclear power plant within eight years, Kazakh Energy Minister Almasadam Satkaliyev said."The construction of the first unit of the NPP takes about 10-12 years if there are no significant risks. But we know that technology does not stand still, there is experience in replicating certain nuclear technologies. Even on the basis of average global timeframes, we will raise the issue with the official vendors about the possibility of moving forward the deadlines so that we have the opportunity to receive the first unit within 8 years," Satkaliyev said at a briefing in Astana on Wednesday.The day before, the minister said Kazakhstan's first nuclear power plant (NPP) could be built in a shorter timeframe than previously announced.As previously reported, the NPP was due to be built by 2035 at an estimated cost of $10-12 billion.On October 6, 2024, the citizens of Kazakhstan approved the construction of the NPP in a nationwide referendum.Kazakhstan is currently considering high power reactor technologies from four suppliers - France, China, Russia and South Korea. According to the country's Ministry of Energy, the average cost of a unit is $5 billion. (ICE ALMATY)
