INDIA’S RENEWABLES PUSH HOLDS LESSONS FOR THE WORLD

While global energy demand is increasing, around 675 million people worldwide still lack access to basic electricity. Cost-effective, green technologies offer compelling ways to close this gap sustainably, and fortunately, their use is growing across the world. Unfortunately, global energy demand is outpacing the supply of these technologies, and grid resilience and financing gaps remain significant barriers, particularly in emerging economies. But there are lessons that countries within the Global South can learn from India, which is both the world’s fastest-growing economy and the fastest-growing renewable energy market among large economies. In 2018, the government of India achieved its goal of electrifying all the country’s villages. Just three years later, India set an ambitious target of deploying 500 gigawatts(GW) of renewable energy capacity by 2030, of which 200 GW has already been achieved. India’s advances are particularly noteworthy in the battery energy storage systems (BESS) market. Adding solar, wind and other intermittent power sources, and effectively managing peak demand, requires energy storage systems. However, high costs have held back their deployment in many countries across Africa, South and Southeast Asia, and Latin America. To change this, India has implemented targeted policies, deployed public investments and mobilised international partnerships. Take India’s largest battery energy storage system, opens new tab(BESS) project, a collaboration between BSES Rajdhani Power Limited (BRPL), IndiGrid and the Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet (GEAPP), a public-private-philanthropic partnership. Approved in June 2024, this project will soon serve 12,000 low-income customers in Delhi. (ICE NEW DELHI)
