Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan pipeline to transport 240,000 tonnes of oil from Kashagan a yearAbout 240,000 of crude oil from Kazakhstan’s oil field Kashagan will be annually pumped through the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan (BTC) pipeline, State Oil Company of Azerbaijan (SOCAR) said in a press release."SOCAR starts transit transportation of oil from Kazakhstan's Kashagan field via the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan (BTC) pipeline. The first shipment of Kashagan oil -- about 6,000 tonnes – was loaded into a tanker at the Aktau seaport on January 25 and arrived at the Sangachal terminal on January 27, from where it will be transported to the Ceyhan port via BTC. This is in pursuance of an agreement on transportation of 240,000 tonnes of Kashagan oil per year that was signed by SOCAR Midstream Operations LLC, a subsidiary of SOCAR, and KMG Trading, a subsidiary of KazMunayGas (KMG)," the press release says.The first shipment of Kashagan oil was carried from Aktau to Bauk the Taraz tanker, owned by KazMorTransFlot, a subsidiary of KMG.In November 2022, SOCAR and KMG signed an agreement on the annual transportation of 1.5 million tonnes of oil from the Tengiz field in Kazakhstan.In February 2024, the parties agreed to gradually increase the volume of Kazakh oil transit through Azerbaijan. In March 2024, SOCAR and KMG signed an agreement to increase the volume of oil transit through Azerbaijan to 2.2 million tonnes per year.At the moment, BTC pumps oil from the Azeri-Chirag-Guneshli (ACG) block and condensate from the Shah Deniz field, oil and condensate produced by State Oil Company of Azerbaijan (SOCAR), as well as oil from other fields, including those in Kazakhstan.The BTC oil pipeline is 1,768 km long, including 443 km in Azerbaijan, 249 km in Georgia and 1,076 km in Turkey. The throughput capacity of the pipeline is over 50 million tonnes of oil a year. The stakeholders of BTC are BP (30.1%), SOCAR (32.96%), Hungary’s MOL (8.9%), Turkiye’s TPAO (6.53%), Italy’s Eni (5%), France’s TotalEnergies (5%), Japan’s Itochu (3 .4%), the US-based ExxonMobil (2.5%), Japan’s Inpex (2.5%), and India’s ONGC Videsh (3.11%).
