Kazakhstan selects Rosatom as potential supplier of technology for NPP constructionRosatom has been included in the list of potential suppliers of technology for the construction of a nuclear power plant (NPP) in Kazakhstan, but no final decision about the future vendor has been made yet, the press service of the Energy Ministry said in a Friday press release."Kazakhstan has completed a competitive dialogue process with potential suppliers of technology for NPP construction. State Corporation Rosatom has been shortlisted as a potential supplier of technology for the construction of a nuclear power plant in Kazakhstan, along with Korea’s KHNP, China’s CNNC and France’s EDF," the press release says."The final choice of a supplier or a consortium for the implementation of the project is yet to be made. It will be made in 2025 taking into account the national interests of Kazakhstan, international standards and commitments," the ministry said.On January 21, Kazakhstan’s delegation led by Energy Minister Almasadam Satkaliyev visited the Russian Federation."This visit was the final stage of a series of negotiations aimed at assessment of proposals from bidders. Similar visits were made in October-December 2024 to the Republic of Korea, the French Republic and the People's Republic of China," the press release says.On October 6, 2024, Kazakhstan's citizens approved the construction of the NPP in a nationwide referendum. The preferred site for the first NPP in Kazakhstan is the village of Ulken in the Almaty region.Kazakhstan considers high-power reactor technologies from four suppliers - France, China, Russia and South Korea. According to the country's Ministry of Energy, the cost of one power unit will be about $5 billion. (ICE ALMATY)
