SAMSUNG ELECT. INVITED SOFTBANK AND OPENAI DISCUSS ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (AI)

Samsung Electronics Chairman Lee Jae-yong invited Softbank Group Chairman Son Jeong-ui and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman to Samsung Electronics' Seocho office on the 4th to hold a three-way meeting and discuss artificial intelligence (AI) alliance plans. It is Chairman Lee's first official move away from judicial risk. Report on page A1 and page 5 of February 4 Samsung Electronics is the No. 1 memory semiconductor company in the system LSI and foundation business and is actively introducing AI to its TVs and smartphones. Softbank Group and OpenAI are promoting the 'Stargate Project' to invest $500 billion (about 732 trillion won) to build a super-large AI infrastructure. Related Articles Page A2 and Page 3 Chairman Sohn met with reporters at the Seocho office and said, "I will talk to Chairman Lee about updates on the Stargate project," adding, "We will discuss potential cooperation measures with Samsung Electronics." When asked if he would request investment from Samsung Electronics, he declined to give an immediate answer, saying, "There is no specific plan." CEO Altman held an open AI developer workshop called "Builder Lab" at The Plaza Hotel in Jung-gu, Seoul, and said, "Korea has strong industries related to AI such as semiconductors and energy and is one of the countries that actively introduce AI," adding, "We will expand collaboration." Regarding the Stargate project, he said, "I think there are many good Korean companies that can contribute." Regarding whether the Korean government will participate in the "National AI Computing Center," which will invest 2.5 trillion won by 2027 to build AI infrastructure, he said, "I have nothing to announce, but I am always thinking about it." Samsung Electronics is planning to promote a global wide-ranging collaboration project through this three-way meeting. Chairman Lee recently met with heads of global big tech companies, including Meta, Amazon, and Qualcomm, to seek large-scale collaboration. Discussions on the 'Korea-US-Japan AI alliance' are also expected to accelerate. On his way to Korea, Altman met not only Chairman Lee, but also SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-won, Kakao CEO Chung Shin-ah and Krafton CEO Kim Chang-han. Chairman Choi reportedly discussed ways to cooperate in AI services, data centers, and semiconductors. It has formed a strategic AI alliance with Kakao. We discussed with Krafton how to collaborate on specialized AI models based on large-scale language models. Regarding the meeting, Samsung Electronics did not issue an official message.
