LEBANON IN TALKS WITH OPEC’ FID FOR ECONOMIC SUPPORT INITIATIVE
Lebanon has recently entered into talks with the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC)’ Fund for International Development (FID) for a significant intervention in launching an initiative aiming for key economic support. According to the President of OPEC’ FID, the OPEC Fund is a development institution and those institutions are created to take additional risks when it comes to development. Additionally, these institutions are counter-cyclical, meaning that when a country faces major issues, these institutions intervene with high risk, but their objective is maximizing development impact, not maximizing returns on their assets. OPEC’s FID is already involved in several investments within Lebanon through both its private sector and public sector arms. Currently, the fund is working with the authorities in Lebanon to plan further intervention in the near future. However, the intervention depends on the circumstances and the right timing to enact the plan. (ICE BEIRUT)
