Kazakhstan will conclude agreements and contracts for NPP construction in Nov 2025Intergovernmental agreements and contracts for the construction of a nuclear power plant (NPP) in Kazakhstan are expected to be signed in November of this year, Energy Minister Almasadam Satkaliyev said."In 2025 we plan to conclude an intergovernmental agreement and contracts (November 2025)," according to the minister’s report released by the press service of the Energy Ministry after a Wednesday meeting of the Ministry in Astana.Satkaliyev also confirmed that the vendor or the consortium for NPP construction must be selected by July 1, 2025.Furthermore, the Energy Ministry will develop a strategy for the nuclear industry development until 2050, according to Satkaliyev."The strategy will also list action plans for the construction of nuclear power plants in future and will define other aspects of the nuclear industry development as necessary for the effective implementation of the republic’s nuclear energy program and the nuclear cluster development,” the minister said.Satkaliyev added that last year the Energy Ministry conducted talks with potential suppliers of nuclear technology as part of the selection of a consortium for the construction of a nuclear power plant in Kazakhstan.On October 6, 2024, Kazakhstan's citizens approved the construction of the NPP in a nationwide referendum. The preferred site for the first NPP in Kazakhstan is the village of Ulken in the Almaty region.Kazakhstan considers high-power reactor technologies from four suppliers - France, China, Russia and South Korea. According to the country's Ministry of Energy, the cost of one power unit will be about $5 billion. (ICE ALMATY)
