Southeast Asian defense ministers have agreed to push for greater cooperation in developing a defense industry supply chain in the region, aiming to reduce reliance on external suppliers as geopolitical uncertainties rise. Speaking at a retreat meeting by the ministers on Wednesday in Penang, Malaysian Defense Minister Khaled Nordin emphasized the need for ASEAN nations to take greater control over their defense needs, particularly in the face of evolving security threats and geopolitical shifts. “Advancing ASEAN’s defense industry is vital for reducing reliance on external suppliers and fostering regional self-reliance in defense acquisition and technological development,” Khaled said, adding that such efforts must also be complemented through specific and targeted technical assistance, capacity building, and research and development collaborations.
