CEMENT SAFEGUARD DUTIES COULD PUSH UP COSTS

SAFEGUARD measures on cement ordered by the Trade department could protect the local industry but also drive up costs for construction projects, an economist said. The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) has imposed provisional safeguard duties on imported cement of P400 per metric ton (MT) or P16 per 40-kilogram bag. Under Republic Act (RA) 8800, a safeguard measure is a trade policy tool that allows the government to remedy serious injury caused by increased imports. The measures are temporary and are implemented to give injured domestic industries time to adjust to import competition and be competitive. https://www.manilatimes.net/2025/02/28/business/top-business/cement-safeguard-duties-could-push-up-costs/2064187 (ICE SINGAPORE)
