KAZAKHSTAN-PRIME/MINISTER-EU-BUSINESS-PROBLEMS

Kazakhstan’s Prime Minister highlights business challenges in EU meetingKazakhstan’s Prime Minister Olzhas Bektenov raised concerns about the difficulties faced by Kazakh businesses in the European Union during a meeting with EU diplomats and industry leaders. The 16th meeting of the Kazakhstan-EU dialogue platform, held with Johannes Baur, the EU’s interim representative, addressed key issues such as delays in obtaining Schengen visas, limited visa appointment slots, and the issuance of short-term visas, particularly in Lithuania, Germany, and Poland."During my recent meeting with domestic entrepreneurs, the issue of challenges in obtaining Schengen visas, especially in countries like Lithuania, Germany, and Poland, was discussed. Kazakh freight carriers are encountering limited appointment availability at visa centers, lengthy waiting periods of up to two months, and the issuance of short-term visas valid for just three months, all of which significantly hinder their operations," the press service quoted the Prime Minister as saying.Additionally, the requirement for original permits for international transport has created further challenges. "These restrictions create additional barriers for Kazakh companies and affect the development of bilateral economic ties with the EU," Bektenov stated. The Prime Minister expressed hope for constructive dialogue to simplify procedures for Kazakh businesses and transporters. He emphasized the EU’s importance as Kazakhstan’s largest trade and investment partner, accounting for over a third of its foreign trade and half of its investments. In 2023, bilateral trade grew by 17%, nearing $50 billion."We are interested in further expanding and diversifying the range of goods supplied to Europe," Bektenov concluded. Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening economic ties and exploring new initiatives. Since 2005, EU investments in Kazakhstan have exceeded $200 billion, representing 47.8% of the country’s total foreign direct investment. (ICE ALMATY)
